AN OVERVIEW

 

 Rishi Bankim Chandra Evening College (RBCEC), Naihati, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, was established in 1947. It is renamed as Evening Section of the erstwhile Rishi Bankim Chandra College, named after the Great Literateur Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. The college was shifted to this present location at Kantalpara on the eastern side of the track the next year June, 1948, when the day section of the college started.

The College Library of the Rishi Bankim Chandra Evening College named as ‘RISHI BANKIM LIBRARY’ is now located in 2nd floor of the new building ‘B-Block’. Rishi Bankim Library (RBL) has been running since the inception of the college itself on 1947. The library began its journey with the help of very small number of books of only commerce faculty. Now all streams such as Art & Humanities, Commerce & Management and Science with UG and PG (M.Com.only) are taught in this college. The RBL is computerized (Automated) through the Integrated Library Management software KOHA (Customized) with around 17,000 printed books. Library services are provided to students, faculties, co-staffs of the college and other members (outsiders) who satisfy required terms and conditions.

 

LIBRARY HOURS

 

The Library and the Reading Room are open from 3.30 PM to 9.00 PM on all days except on 2nd and 4th Saturdays, Sundays and Institutional holidays.

 

TECHNICAL PROCESSING

All the books procured in the Library are being classified with the help of Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) scheme by the Librarians to organize the books subject wise on the shelf in proper order for easy and timely access. After classification books are catalogued according to AACR2R and OPACs (Online Public Access Catalogue) are generated using KOHA Library Management Software. The Manual catalogue and Online Catalogue both are available for browsing and searching during Library Hours within the Library. The Web-OPAC is available for browsing and searching using IP Address.

 

MEMBERSHIP

All Under Graduate and Post Graduate students, non-teaching staffs, all types of faculties and administrative staffs of the College are eligible for library membership. Outside persons including ex-students may also be admitted on the basis of written application with proper documents to use the Library for reading and reference purposes at the discretion of the Librarians Outside Members.

 

ACCESS TO VISITOR

Visitors may visit the Library during Library Hours (3.30 PM to 9.00 PM) on all Working Days. Outside students or research scholars may use the Library on the basis of written request with prior permission and proper documents.

 

 

MISSION OF THE LIBRARY

 

The mission of Rishi Bankim Library is to provide and manage information resources to support teaching and learning process at the college and the informational needs of the library members.

 

 OBJECTIVES

 

 The mission of the library is accomplished through the following objectives:

 

•           To evaluate, acquire, organize, preserve and provide information resources that adequately support the curricula of the college, the information needs of library community

 

•           To develop and maintain facilities that are conducive to study, research and reflection

 

•           To provide appropriate and timely access to the library’s resources

 

•           To foster productive relationships with internal and external members that promote and enhance the library’s resources and services
